Thursday's Child by strangeandcharm , read by alchemynerd - 12+ hours of hurty goodness! Yes, you read that right - 12+ hours! The story is Dean/Castiel, an AU in which Dean managed to kill Lucifer when he was in Sam's body. I've actually read the story twice before - so enjoyable!  alchemynerd 's voice is very pleasant. The recording is clear, as is the reader's diction, and her pacing is careful without being plodding. 

The Eagle

I actually hadn't heard of The Eagle before my dear ariadnes_string  posted a lovely little piece of slashy h/c - The Place You Are - some time ago (highly recommended!), but as soon as I saw that it was - 1. historical, 2. Roman, and 3. filled with fine looking men, I was ALL OVER IT. jaxie12  has done several excellent podfics in this fandom (here). And also, one of my favorite readers produced this enjoyable piece:

Suffer, Spasm, Strain by onelittlesleep , read by dodificus. dodificus has a lovely accent and unhurried pacing. She doesn't do near enough podfics, I'm afraid! This particular story is so compelling and unusual - and it clocks in at only around 15 minutes. 

So it's been a while since I did a fic rec post.  This one includes lots of Dean/Castiel goodies, since that's mainly what I'm reading lately.  It's also what I'm writing (Castiel with a big hairy beard, of all things!).  Anyhow, hope you likee!

Dark Night of the Soul by maboheme; Rating: R; ~900 words; Summary: In the dark, it's the two of them learning what it is to feel like men.  A lovely, poignant piece.

Last Angel on Earth by starkraves; Unrated; Warning: Non-Con; The End AU. Very dark Dean, skillfully told with a killer last line.

A Rain of Feathers by Lacey McBain; Rating: NC-17; Words: ~7800; Summary: Sex pollen Angel!Porn with a plot. No, seriously.  Awesome sex pollen - funny and sweet and a bit hot as well.

What Would an Angel Say?  (The Devil Wants to Know) by Nataliadarimini; Rating: NC-17; Summary:  "That look on your face just now," Castiel whispers,  "It was like the ecstasy of the martyrs.  It was breath-taking." Beautiful piece. Castiel tries to comprehend Dean ... and does it through sex.

the hunter's prayer by ethia; Rating: R; Words: 2.429; Summary: Maybe prayer is just a matter of perspective.  Lyrical, well written piece on prayer.

Sweet Flame by edenbound; Rating: R; Summary: Dean wants so much to be able to see him. For the Porn Battle! Short but positively incendiary!!

Feast of All Saints by oselle; Rating: NC-17; Words: 30,000; Summary: It's 2015 and the world's gone to hell in the Croatoan apocalypse. Separated from their group of virus survivors, Dean and his erstwhile guardian angel find themselves stranded in Appalachia. A sequel to The Shame Of It All and Once, could be considered the third part of a trilogy with those stories (but this one can probably stand alone). Those other two stories were in the PG range, so please take note of the rating and pairings for this one.  Dark, gritty and rich description and characterization make the journey of Dean to Cas believable.

Not On My Watch by baka-writes. Rating: NC-17 for swears and porn like whoa; Summary: Missing scene from 5x03. Dean and Castiel get wasted after the brothel doesn't work out the way Dean had planned. Smoking hot porn. First time.

The Misery of This Age by altyronsmaker; Rating: NC-17; Words: 3,355; Summary: Castiel forces a comfort on Dean. Hot and intense, angry sex turned tender. Beautifully written.

These two stories deserve a post all their own under the heading OMG THESE FICS ARE THE BEST THINGS EVER!

Clangs by vee_fic (Gen, R) Summary:  It was just a stupid accident. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that. Smoking!Dean, homeless and mental. Sam the psychology grad student. They both try to help one another and it's just so painfully, wonderfully well done. I read this one a long time ago and forgot to bookmark it, but it stayed with me and really stands out amongst the millions (okay, slight exaggeration) of stories I've read in the meantime.  It's not an easy, happy read.  But it's an awesome one.

Lazarus Came Forth by oselle (Gen, R) Summary: Dean returns from hell and finds himself alive and alone in the stark landscape of an America that has gone terribly wrong. Adrift in hostile territory and pursued by hell's bounty hunters, he sets out on a desperate hunt to find Sam. Apocafic and AU for everything after Season 3. Huge kudos to catsbycat who recc'd this to me as a possible podfic.  I'm recording it now, all 70K words of it.  It's that good.  If you like Hurt!Dean, taut writing, excellent characterization, and atmosphere up the wazoo (I'm so poetic) then don't miss this one.  I'm rather surprised it hasn't been recced from here to eternity.  It totally deserves to be.

I know everyone is still sad about the news of Kim Manners' untimely death, but perhaps some good fic reading will distract you from the suck that is real life sometimes.  Rest in peace, Kim. 

Supernatural Slash & Het

Beasts and Outlaws by calamitycrow  (NC-17, Dean/OMC, Sam/Sarah) Approx 80,000 of an epic AU that will make you say: Holy shit!  Characters so well-rounded that they continue to live in your mind and amazing descriptions. Read this one for the setting as much as the plot; it's set in the Southwest, and as someone who's spent a good part of her life in both the rural and urban Southwest, it's definitely got the culture, myths, mood, and landscape down pat. An amazing read that needs to be recced from here to eternity.  Summary: Back in 2001, two brothers made their choices. Now Dean's in a relationship and Sam's a respected hunter who has his father's love and approval. Of course, nothing's that easy when you are a Winchester....

Falling Through by Corona (NC-17, Sam/Dean) Great shifting, surrealistic style that's compellingly, skillfully executed. I love how stark Dean is with need. And the ending is great. Summary: Like his world is wrong in some way, for not having a Sam.

I love the bones of you by fleshflutter (PG-13, Dean/Castiel plus some hints of Sam/Ruby) I love how this starts out as dark and explicit, but turns into something different.  Summary: Dean has been missing for three days.

Cold as Ice by extraonions (NC-17, Dean/Ellen) The details and character interactions make the story. And the sex? HOT. Summary: They say a measure of truth can be found at the bottom of every bottle.  Ellen Harvelle isn't sure about that, but she is sure about one thing.  Sam Winchester is very much like his daddy; growing more like John every day.  But Dean?  Dean reminds her of Bill.

Body Work by chemm80 (NC-17, Dean/Jax).  Hot crossover action with a nice build and great payoff.  Summary: “Jax is tattooed with a replica of his patch, so big it covers his whole back. A skeletal grim reaper holding a sickle and some sort of crystal ball takes up the center, with “Sons of Anarchy, California” in semicircles at top and bottom. Dean’s never seen anything like it.”

Incinerate by amory_vain  (Alec/Ames, unrated) Non-con, masturbation. Sort of a follow-up to Created in Image. Short, dark, delicious little bit of evil Ames and helplessly turned on Alec.

Chimera by jaguarcaine . Ames/Alec; (not rated, but definitely NC-17 material) The pairing totally threw me - I DESPISE Ames. He's no boy scout in this story, but it works. This piece is completely amazing--it's well-written, humorous, angsty, passionate, full of desperate sex, babies, and love. 16 parts. Includes gratuitous Hurt!Alec. Bitchy!Max has a minor role.

All the King's Horses and All the King's Men by alyse (Alec/Logan; R) Alec/Logan isn't something that I thought I'd enjoy, but once again my prejudices have been overridden by excellent writing. alyse takes her time with description, detail and nuance, making the climax (pun intended) perfectly satisfying. The h/c is tender and touching without being overwrought. Hurt!Alec. Summary: Logan had grown used to the quiet in the evenings, but that was before he took a sharp left into Surrealsville, population two. Nice long read (17,000 words)

And in the Winter's Bitter Chill by alyse (Alec/Logan, mostly gen; PG-13) Summary: Winter's come early this year. Logan tries not to read too much into that. Sort of an Alec character study, including the piano, from Logan's surprisingly non-annoying/wimpy POV.

The One With The Alleyfucking by veronamay (Logan/Alec, R) Summary: Set immediately after the pool game in 'Borrowed Time'. Max left in a cloud of angst; Logan and Alec, presumably, did not. Enter PWP! GUH! Totally hot, and a little bittersweet. More than just a PWP.

A Perfect Mirror by backinblack (Ben/Alec, NC-17) Clever, funny, and hot. Love the pairing, and the Alec-voice. Short, but very enjoyable.

Standing The Heat by veronamay (NC-17; Alec/Logan). Summary: He notices when Max disappears for a couple of days and comes back looking hollow-eyed and haunted, of course he does, but he never figured it'd happen to him. Incredibly hot and just beautifully, perfectly written. Alec is desperate and Logan can't resist.

Happy Hour by minkmix (NC-17 - Edge of Consent; OMC/Alec) Summary: Alec is overheated in an upscale bathroom with some guy down his pants. There's a new drug on the market that can put an X5 into heat... Hot and intense. Alec gets slipped a sex mickie.

And Then There Was One by mickeym (NC-17, Logan/Alec/Max) Short, hot, bittersweet. Threesome that's about more than just sex. Although the sex is pretty damn impressive. :-)

What Comes Around Verse by spastic_visions (Gen; PG-13) A series of five stories. Loved how bittersweet it felt, how Sam misses Dean so damn much. how Alec had his own issues, and they made him into a different character from what we saw on DA, a logical evolution. Loved how seamlessly the DA and SPN worlds blended together. And I loved that this was gen. I've read my share of Sam/Alec slash and although I like that, too, this was refreshingly different.

With a Bang 'Verse by minkmix (Gen; PG-R) Starts with the 15 chapter story "With a Bang," and continues with "Aftershocks" (16 chapters), Minor Tremor (8 chapters), Not a Whimper (10 chapters), Ripple Effect (12 chapters), and Incandesence (? chapters). I was a bit intimated by the sheer length of this verse, which kept me from reading it for a while. It shouldn't have, because the chapters are short, and the story is delightfully addictive. Sam is Alec's dad, and Dean is the ornery uncle. I love the entire tone of this series. Alec is cheerfully oblivious, and he fits in perfectly as the youngest Winchester. Sam is more serious and remote than we see him in canon, and Dean is wonderfully gruff. The series has a sort of happy-go-lucky feel to it, combined with generous portions of my true love, hurt/comfort. A definite must-read.

Mortal Wounds by splashpink (Sam/Alec, R) Summary: Sometimes loving Alec hurts worse than losing Dean. A quick peek at a larger picture. This story could use a beta, but is still vivid and compelling.

To Him Ascribe All Sin by liath (NC-17; Dean/Castiel, implied Sam/Dean) - Summary: Sam's gone in more ways than one, and Dean tries to deal with Hell catching up with him. Dean's suffering memories from hell, Sam's distant, and Castiel takes care of Dean.

i get a feeling by happywriter06 (R; Dean/Cassie) - A brief piece that really sings with emotion. Oh, Dean! 

More Castiel, anyone? Since we didn't see him this past week on our beloved show (sobs). All of the below, except the crossover, feature Castiel in one form or another. BTW, I apparently have a thing for fics in the 2nd person, because there are three of them recc'd here.

Sclerenchyma by tigriswolf (PG, Gen). 2nd person. Notes: the title equals "A supportive tissue of vascular plants, consisting of thick-walled, usually lignified cells. Sclerenchyma cells normally die upon reaching maturity but continue to fulfill their structural purpose in the plant." This is short and intimate, like a whispered confession.

teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above by i_speak_tongue  (Unrated, Gen) 2nd person. SUMMARY: What Dean sees that night nearly destroys him. Simply marvelous. Dean's pain just leaks out of every line; the distance between he and Sam is palpable. If you only read one of these recs, make it this one.

They Say It's All About To End by bloodnfire (R, Sam/Dean) 2nd person. Summary: God wants you to save the world. A striking piece, both beautiful and painful.

Paradise by hollycomb (PG-13, Dean/Castiel) 1st person. Summary: Years after the apocalypse, Dean gets saved again. Outsider POV about Dean's broken life without Sam. It's touching and heartbreaking, but ultimately satisfying.

Laying of Hands by seraphwings (Unrated, Dean/Castiel) A great Dean voice combined with Hurt!Dean and Angel sex? Yummy!

Castiel takes care of him the best that he can. I've read a lot of Dean/Castiel sex fics that don't seem to really work. This one does. YUM.

The author calls this shameless PWP, but it's so much more - it's funny, hot and a little sweet, too. I have SO MUCH love for this story. If you're having a bad day, read it. It will definitely cheer you up. And possibly make you horny.

Heaven is For Thee Too High by fools_game  (Gen; PG) - Dean is hurt, Sam is concerned, and Castiel is by turns tender and menacing. A well written, totally enjoyable little story.
