This is likely to piss off some of you on the flist (sorry, but I gotta be me!), but I agree with this about the whole misogyny broo-haha going on right now.  Although I would have left the whole STFU out of it had I written it.  I could go on and on about the pendulum of social change swinging too far one way and then too far the other, but instead, how about if we talk about ....

SCRABBLE!  Yes, I am a geek who loves this game.  It might possibly have to do with the fact that I'm an editor in RL.  Anyhoo - a friend introduced me to a great website where you can play via email.  You get an email notification when the other player has entered a word, click on the link and you make your move.  So you don't have to play in real time, but whenever you have the time.  Anyone???

It's scrabulous.com. I went there and tried to sign up for a game and got completely and totally confused and people were requesting to join my game and I wigged out. LOL

Then my friend told me about the email version, which is thankfully simple enough for a two year old. So I'm happy. :-)

Anyhow, if you want to play a game, just shoot me your email addy and I'll set one up for us.

Interesting post.

I don't disagree that Dean is a sexist asshole (one of the reasons I'm a Sam Girl :), and his early Season Three characterization seemed fine to me--it was Dean at his most base, because he was under pressure (except for when he was being stupid to move the plot along--that just seemed like sloppy writing and annoyed me).

I do think there are other legitimate gender issues in the show. This just isn't really one of them.

Hey, I just started listening to the Doll verse - I haven't been driving much lately so have gotten behind on my podfic listening. AWESOME job!! You have a great voice! And you do the inflections so well! I was grinning and grinning while listening to it in the doc's office. :-)

I'm interested to hear about the gender issues in the show. I assume they are to do with the number of female victims?

Hey, thanks!!! That means so much coming from you--goddess of podfics.

I LOVE doing them. It's like showing how much I adore a fic and also giving a little performance all in one.

I hope that more and more people take an interest in them--I think they are a bit of an art all their own, and in some cases can really enhance a story (I'm not talking about my own podfics here--I'm just a newbie :) ). But like zoetrope reading me Cesperanza's SGA fic? Or you reading Day of the Dead? Or the reader of Life's a Banquet...(omg is she funny)? Yes, please!

I'm really glad to have met someone else who loves them, too, and is recording in my current fandom. :D

**

Oh dear. At the risk of sounding like a spineless chicken, I'm going to admit that I probably should not have even commented on the gender issues thing, because my thoughts on the issue are not at all original, nor are they something I'm prepared to spend significant time angsting over when there is fun to be had and podfics to record. And occasionally realife work to do. :D

But I can link to people with more thinking abilities than I have.

I don't agree with everything these fans say, but I think they are a good, thoughtful representation of the general issues some fans have:

Yay for spending your energy on podfics instead of wanking!!! Interesting posts. I like that we have some really intelligent, articulate people in the fandom. Even if I don't agree with them. :-)

And of course you are not a spineless chicken!!! You had the courage to disagree and I think that's great. I, for one, welcome hearing other people's thoughts on things as long as they aren't insulting. I'm one of those rare moderates - comes from training as a historian I think. It gives you the ability to look at both sides of issues.

*g* I have always been terrible at Scrabble. I end up using words like "to" and "and." Which is why I don't play it at all.

*flails* It is. I don't talk about this with most of the people on my Flist because we don't see eye to eye on it and I don't want to totally alienate anyone.

I can see where people are coming from. Dean offends me at times. But no more than my brothers talking about girls and, hell, a lot less than some of things I've heard in school. He's a guy. Which doesn't give him a free pass to act like an asshole, but still must be taken into consideration.

Also, my kneejerk reaction to all the people saying that Superantural has become suddenly misogynistic this season is that they don't like the writing or they don't like this season and have latched onto something they've been ignoring for two years. I kind of just roll my eyes at it all.

Really? Too misogynistic this season? This is the same Dean that declared a girl was "fun," that uses sweetheart in a belittling manner when he's pissed at a woman, that leered at Jess the first time he saw her? Oh, no, he wasn't misogynistic before this season. *rolls eyes*

HI. Don't ever ask me what I think of Route 666. I HAVE OPINIONS. *G*

You're totally right - Dean has always been like he is from day one. It's just part of his smartass rednecky exterior.

Opinions are GOOD. I have a few of my own. :-) One of them is that I actually liked Route 666 and Cassie, which is decidedly in the minority, lol.

I was somewhat unpleasantly surprised when Sam called Ruby a bitch in the finale. It's so unlike Sam that it was pretty obvious he was trying hard to be like Dean.

Tee hee about my icon. LOL.

Doesn't mean I don't want to smack his mouth once in a while, though. And Sam! NO, SAM. No calling Ruby a bitch! Your mother's ghost is going to wash your mouth out with soap, yo. And then Jessica'll hit you.

Icon! Is pretty! Even if I didn't like Cassie.

I loved that Dean had a love interest that he had loved at some point in time. I hated Cassie and her, "If he were a white man, would you do something?" HATED. I think I sort of maybe snarled at the screen when she started in on her, "Nobody cares he died 'cause he's black," spiel and it just, um, never went away.

I fully admit that this is because I have issues. :D

That said, um. I liked the actress a lot? She and Dean were pretty together.

Hi there--one more link about this issue caught my eye today.

I do think that Dean is a sorta a sexist asshole and always has been, like I commented upthread.

But it is interesting to look at the numbers, as this fan has done. If you're just going by basic count, it does look like there's been a change in Season Three.

Interesting post. The very few female regular characters in seasons 1 and 2 were basically on the good guys' team, though, and that can't be said for season 3, when both Ruby and Bela were cast in the bad or at least morally ambiguous roles which I suppose in the writers' mind makes it 'okay' to call them bitches, etc.

Had to laugh that someone actually went through all three seasons and counted up the word 'bitch' tho ...:-)

That's a fair point, definitely. Gotta account for salience and sample size.

Well, anyway. Back to podficcing--I'm doing Old!Dean and Sam---hee!

Oh, and I loved your interpretation of the darkling plain story, by the way.

I'm typically a gen girl, but hey, that story was really good, and it's a good example of how a podfic can enhance the original (what with the awesome sibilant S's and the snipped-off cursing).

Old!Dean, eh? Sounds intriguing!! Hey, I finished the Doll!Verse today - so so great!! You definitely had me laughing. I think you are a MUCH better reader than I am. Sometimes the sound of my voice just makes me cringe, lol.

The darkling plain story is one of my absolute faves!! Funny and sweet and really hot in a wanking kind of way (there's that word again, lol). I dig gen as much as I do the wincest because it's a lot more original, I think. Wincest is pretty derivative, although it has some really good writers in it.

Anyhoo, I'm glad you mentioned the 'sss' sounds because I was afraid they'd irritate the listener.

Gonna listen to "the cost" next! Although it might make me cry ...

LOL about blowing the mike out. Yeah, I do the same thing. I assume you mean that pfft noise? If you do, there's something called a pop filter that you can make or buy to place in front of your mouth to stop it, but that's kind of high end. I try to eliminate the noises by placing the mike a bit above my lips although that doesn't always work.

I think that the change isn't so much that Dean's gotten worse, as there's suddenly a re-occuring female character that he can't stand.

In a lot of the instances in first and second season, he knows the women/female monster for what, an episode? Half of an episode? Whereas this season there are two female characters that he hates, which gets compounded on every single time they come on.

I don't know. I know Dean's always been sort of a sexist asshole. I just don't think he's gotten worse this season; he's just had two three female characters he's hated instead of just the MOtW he sees once and forgets about, you know?

Bah. I am explaining my head wrong. At any rate, that was an interesting link, thanks.

I think that's a fair point, indeed. (Twasadark mentions it, too.)

Not sure it totally covers (or excuses) the insults in S3, but maybe if combined with the extra pressure Dean's under this year...dunno.

Anyway, next Season will certainly be interesting, as I'm assuming both Dean and Sam are going to go even darker. And it would be somewhat amusing if Bela and Ruby are Dean's only company in hell.

I don't know. I'm hoping they scale back on the sex-insults (skank? come on now, Dean), but other than that...

I am kind of really hoping we get a good female character around again. I liked Ellen. I started to like Jo right before I found out she was getting written out.

(I liked her at the end of No Exit, but not so much before then. And when Ellen said she left, because, dammit, she was a big girl and it was time she started acting like it. And then they wrote her out, blech.)

I am seriously hoping we don't see anymore Bela. Another thing I feel strongly about. I want Ruby back, though. *sighs* I can't figure out if dead!Ruby!Body means that we shall get Ruby in another person next year, if Lilith sent Ruby back to hell, or if Ruby will just inhabit the same dead body.

Or, hell, for all we know, that's the last of Ruby. *sighs* I sort of miss Ellen a lot.
