Okay, people, I'm trying not to freak out and it's so NOT working!!!  I just came upon this SNAKE in my back yard and I don't know what it is and my poor doggies could attack it and get bit and die writhing in agony and how am I supposed to work out there with a huge slithery thing lurking in the bushes?????

So, does anyone know what the heck this is?  I'm in Southern California, btw.  It's not a rattlesnake as I know QUITE well what those look like ....

Oh, here's a link to the pic if you want to see it closer up ....

And by the way, the last time I saw one of these things - which looked the same - was on my front stoop.  I promptly shrieked my fool head off and it jerked and zoomed back into the bushes.  So, this tells me that snakes have pretty good hearing.

LOL.

Try stamping on the ground near it. Snakes can pick up the vibrations - usually, they try to get away from them.

Other than that... I'm kinda fresh out. Pest control?

Good luck, anyway!

Thanks, hon! We've got a lot of thick brush around which all kinds of creepy crawlies like to hide in ... my dog found the dessicated remains of a possum not long ago and promptly ran around the yard with it in her mouth for FAR too long. Talk about ICK.

Anyhow, the below poster linked me to a pic of it - thankfully a non-venomous snake.

Good idea about stomping - I'll have to remember that!

Oh, God - thank you SOOOOO much. Yes, that first picture is exactly right! Thank heavens that it's non-poisonous and even EATS rattlesnakes. Whew. I'm still freaked out tho. Think I'll huddle in front of the TV and watch my Stargate Atlantis DVDs instead of working out in the yard like I should ....

Thanks, hon! I made sure to pen the dogs up before they saw it - otherwise they probably would have been running around the yard with it in their mouths!

Glad it's not all deadly, at least. EEk!

If it keeps showing up, you could try calling animal control, pretending to be a total girl who "thinks it could be poisonous", and they might send someone out to get it and relocate it out to the desert or something.

They would do it back in AZ (as did the police, but they sort of laugh at you when it ends up being a king snake - thanks, mom).
