I think you're right about the territory thing with female cats. A couple of years ago I tried to introduce a kitten to my 7yr old cat...........BIG MISTAKE!
I thought that my cat would get all maternal and take care of the tiny kitten, but no, she turned in to "Evil Hell Cat". She was so nasty to the kitten that I had to return it from whence it came!! The poor thing was so scared of her that it peed itself whenever she came near.
The kitten went to a nice new home where it has no Evil Hell Cat to deal with!
