To answer some of your questions:

Cracker is a British show starring Robbie Coltrane (Remember Hagrid?) as a character not unlike House - he's a brilliant psychologist, but also a cranky old bastard with a swathe of addictions a mile wide and some serious daddy issues.

Life on Mars - another British show, in which a modern day policeman is in a car accident and wakes up back in the 1970s. It's quite brilliant.

Father Ted - British show. Three priests, one house, wacky adventures.

Fawlty Towers - Are we shocked that it's another British show? Absolutely classic British humour, in which John Cleese of Monty Python fame owns the worst hotel in England.

In conclusion, you need to watch more British television, because you're missing out on some awesome stuff.

Hey, thanks, hon! The only British show I've watched with any regularity is Benny Hill, which shows both my age and general maturity level - ha ha! Also, my best friend is trying to get me to watch Torchwood ...

You're right - I will have to check out more British TV. Maybe after S3 of Supernatural is over and I am in mourning ... :-)

If you're looking for a fandom, Life On Mars is the way to go - it's a current show with a moderately attractive male lead in an unusual situation, so he's being slashed all over the place.

If you're looking for a good, laugh-you-ass-off funny classic, go with Fawlty Towers. It's vintage, and the whole lot should be on DVD for a reasonable price, and, like most Cleese stuff, it's eminently quotable.
