Sam/Dean in the news! But not THAT kind of news

Wincesters are being studied now, people. Like, WRITTEN ABOUT IN BORING ACADEMIC JOURNALS type of studying.
Favorite lines & link:

The celebration of the semicriminal life of tortured outcasts roaming the earth is nothing new; it hearkens back to Romanticism

Well, duh.  Have you SEEN the way these "tortured outcasts" look??

Dean shoves him off, but the camera-and Dean's eyes-linger upon Sam's body writhing drunkenly upon the bed.

Well whose eyes WEREN'T frickin' lingering on said drunken writhing?? LOL!! And now I should go re-watch that eppy so that I can see it again ....

If you dare, here's the article. Warning: in true academic fashion, it makes Wincest boring. Oh, btw, I had a job interview for teaching community college today and it went great! Woo hoo! Maybe I'll have to put this article on my list of required readings. LOL!!!

oh my goodness, this is like an article that was in my newspaper (I don't know if it came from a nationally syndicated article or what) a few years ago about college courses being taught to discuss Buffy! I think there was also something mentioned about a book titled something like "What Would Buffy Do? - A Girl's Guide to Self-Empowerment". I should scan/transcribe that article...it was pretty interesting.
I'll have to read this one over the weekend.

Thank you for this link! It's very interesting, I'm about halfway through.

all of Sam and Dean's serious romantic relationships with women are doomed to failure—and if Sam is involved, usually violent failure.

*snicker* POOR SAMMY!

*snark*

This amuses me.

That very interesting.

Ooooh. I loved the discussion of wincestous undertones w/in the show itself. *is a geek*

LOL! WWBD, huh? My husband likes to say WWJWD? As in, "What would John Wayne do?" Haha

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I saw the link over on TWOP. Yes, poor Sammy with his doomed women. He just can't win!

I SO don't get Wincest.

That's awesome! What will you be taeching? Creative writing?

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was initially HORRIFIED by the idea of wincest. Now I'm reading the stuff aloud. *facepalm* I think that the idea of two hot guys who don't look alike makes the whole incest taboo less scary -- at least in fiction. In real life, incest is VERY BAD.

I'll be teaching history. I love love love history. For all that I'm a writer I've only taken one literature class. But history is nothing but stories! They're just real. :-)

Cool. I've been thinking about trying to get a job at a community college after I graduate and teach a creative writing class on fan fic but I really don't know much about it. I'm still learning.

This is so funny, I was going to write a paper on supernatural and the gay dynamic myself for school, but decided not to in case it came off too biased since I read so much of it myself hahaha!

"Dean shoves him off, but the camera-and Dean's eyes-linger upon Sam's body writhing drunkenly upon the bed."

THAT made me laugh soooooo hard, I just can take the idea of an academic writing about Dean ogling Sam "writhing" body seriously

awesome

That article was actually interesting to me. The only problem I had was about when the author states that Sam was willing to kill Bobby in order to get Dean back (Mystery Spot). Without going back and watching the episode again right now, it was my understanding Sam killed Bobby specifically because he believed that was not Bobby, that by that time he knew the Trickster was playing with him. Iirc what Sam says is along the lines of "You want to know why? Because you're not Bobby". Only when "Bobby" is left laying there for several seconds does Sam begin to doubt his own actions and briefly become upset until "Bobby" disappears.

Well, that's not really a surprise. In my university alone (and keep in mind I'm not in America, in fact this is a country with a population of barely 300.000) there have been written 3 grad papers on Buffy. My guess is there are hundreds if not thousands such writings to be found in the colleges and universities of the US, not to mention the rest of the world. Although Buffy through time probably had a bigger following there is no reason to believe Supernatural won't inspire just as many writings. In many ways the show provides an even more fascinating setting for the study of human nature in extreme and unusual circumstances than Buffy did. Buffy may have offered more characters and thus a bigger variety of relationships between these characters (romantic or otherwise) but hardly any of them were as complex as Sam and Dean's characters and relationship (again, romantic or otherwise).

Thank you for the link (I came here from the newsletter), it was a very interesting read.

I really enjoyed that article. Not that it said anything I hadn't already thought about and even might have talked about with my friend, but it's always fascinating to read academic articles about pop culture.

Oh, yes! It never stop to amaze me, the way pop culture is so seriously studied in USA. Buffy is, of course, what come first to my mind. I must have read at least 2 dozens of academics articles about the show. But I have also read that kind of articles about Xena, or The Simpsons...
And, yes, sure, IMHO, this is weird, but also, awesome. I love to read these kind of stuff =D

I read the whole thing. It really makes me kinda glad I didn't go for my PhD like I once thought I would. LOL.

I hear you! I can't seem to stop reading more and more and more of it. And now, with the new season, I'm sure there will be even more! LOL

That article was actually interesting to me.

Me, too, actually. It made me not miss academia, lol. Writing those kind of papers is sorta soul-numbing! Porn is MUCH better. haha!

The only problem I had was about when the author states that Sam was willing to kill Bobby in order to get Dean back (Mystery Spot).

Yeah, you're totally right. I guess she was too focused on Sam's "drunken writhing" LOL

I know, right? Of all the papers I had to write, thankfully none of mine were that indepth. I pray I don't have write any papers for the class I start in November *breaks out in sweat thinking about it*

Yeah, you're totally right. I guess she was too focused on Sam's "drunken writhing" LOL

That did make me giggle. And Dean's eyes lingering on Sam's writhing. Ummm, yeah. More like looking at Sam and feeling a bit helpless as to the situation.

Wow! I had no idea that Buffy had been written about so much, but you're right, it had more fans. Even though SPN is better (of course, lol).

I'm glad you liked the article - I found it to be pretty accurate. It's just so weird to see fandom all laid out and analyzed like that! :-)

It is wild to read about pop culture, huh? Just think, we're making history with our little pornographic stories! LOL!!

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
the way pop culture is so seriously studied in USA.

It certainly is "in" right now, that's for sure! It's fun to look at it from another angle. I'm so glad you liked the article. Does this mean that wincest is respectable now? Haha!!

oh yeah. i am totaly sharing that with all my friends that are like eww what do you read that crap for!
