Florida!

We had a lovely time in Florida and I'm still trying to adjust to post-vacation times. We even met a fellow fangirl!  Yay for [livejournal.com profile] voicegrl who is made of 50 kinds of win!

I had to practically drag the hubster away for vacation because he's like a pony at a grist mill, trudging around in an endless circle.  Work, work, work, work.  And I'm always: VACATION, VACATION, VACATION!  If I had more money I'd always been somewhere new, but alas, I'm relegated to traveling every now and again.  I've wanted to see Florida for a while now since I've never been and when the hubster mentioned that he wanted to see a space shuttle launch before the program ended for good I jumped on the opportunity.  Here's pretty much what we saw of the Space Shuttle Atlantis launch:

This was preceded by lots of rumbling and crackling and jets of flames and people cheering.  It was pretty cool, although the video I took of it didn't come out. *pouts*  After the thing got in the air I couldn't see it through the digital display anymore so I don't even know if I was taking a picture of it, lol.

It was a pretty picture perfect day for the launch - which went off without a hitch. Yay!!!  We spent the next two days at Kennedy Space Center looking at gigantic hunks of spacecraft like this:

This is a Saturn V rocket housed inside a GIGUNDO building.  And here's me and the hubster on the moon rover:

What? It was bright up there!  The rest of the trip was mine, so we went to St. Augustine and the Everglades and even made it down to Key Largo.

We saw picturesque old hotels in St. Augustine ....

Saw pretty trees (on Key Largo) ....

Ran afoul of alligators (not really) ...

Apparently there are 2 MILLION alligators in Florida. WOW!! Also there are lots and lots of birds like this anhinga in the Everglades:

Everglades which pretty much look like this ...

And this (the hubby) ...

We ate so freaking much! Italian, Cuban, Seafood, bar food, fast food, food food food. We ate so much that it was the last straw for me. I've been wanting to lose weight for YEARS now and I'm finally going to do something about it - so tomorrow I'm signing up for Weight Watchers and hopefully soon you'll all be seeing less of me. Bwah ha.

Love your pics! Good for you for braving the Florida heat this time of year. ;)

It was really nice the first day but it got hot pretty quickly! And humid. Ick! We sure drank lots and lots of water!

Beautiful pictures. It looks like you had a great time!

Thanks! We really did have a nice time! :-)

Wow! I love Florida so much, so I'm really really glad you had such a great time. And it looks like you went from one end of the state to the other (it's a REALLY long state!). Don't feel bad about the food! It is just that good. But good luck to you with your plans.

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2010-05-24 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
It *is* a really long state! Not quite as bad as California, though, lol.

Yes, the food really is just that good. Sigh. And now I have to control myself until I get this extra weight off ... but I can do it! (positive thinking, right?)

[identity profile] eggblue.livejournal.com 2010-05-25 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Cali is like twice as long, yes, but Florida has two coasts and the panhandle, so that's a lot right there ;)

You can do it! Just don't beat yourself up over it. Go for deliciousness, and positive thinking, yes :)

Sounds like you had a wonderful time and managed to fit loads in. Great pictures too. My sister is always talking about St. Augustine and how much she likes it (She's in Kissimmee) there.

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2010-05-24 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
St. Augustine is really lovely and there's history every where you turn.

Wow! We were very near your sister for about 5 days! It's a nice area. :-)

Awww, I LOVE St. Augustine. Me and Hubby got engaged at the fort there. Glad you checked out the aligator farm! Did you tour Flagler? It's awesome. :)

Glad you had a good time! Next time maybe you'll come a little farther southwest. :)

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2010-05-24 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, how cool about the fort at St. Augustine!! I love hearing stories like that!

No, we didn't tour Flagler, we just went in and looked at the rotunda which is lovely. We also got cooled down for a little bit ... it was a HOT day!

Woo! I went to the space center when I was in high school, but have never seen a launch. How cool! Two years ago we went on a cruise, and our first stop was Key West. Seems like it's probably very much like Key Largo. I fell in love and can't wait for another chance to visit.

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2010-05-27 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh! I wanted to make it out to Key West but we just didn't have the time. Maybe on another trip ... ? I've never been on a cruise ship. One of these days ... :-)

Isn't the shuttle awesome! I saw it land several times when I was stationed at Edwards AFB. It's also pretty cool when the 747 takes off with the shuttle on it's back.

Glad you had a great time.

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2010-05-27 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the shuttle is WAY cool! Such a feat of engineering! It's almost frightening what we humans can achieve when we put our minds to it.

Nice pictures (even the creepy alligator)!

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2010-05-27 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL - alligators ARE pretty creepy!
