Stargate Universe
The hubster and I watched the second episode of Stargate Universe tonight, and I have some profound utterances mutterings about it. (I fell asleep during the last half hour of the pilot episode, and according to the hubster I didn't miss a whole lot, so that's the level of excitement I approached this 2nd ep with). "Plot" related questions:
Also, is anyone watching Flash Forward? It seems okay. Dave likes it, so we'll probably continue watching it, and it's got an intriguing plot. It just ... well, I haven't fallen in love with anyone from it yet. We'll see if I do.
- We were really confused about why the hell a bunch of highly trained military men couldn't run around in the desert for 12 hours without collapsing due to dehydration. And, more to the point, if they really were all that hot why did everyone have long-sleeved clothing on? And where was the sweating?
- Why can't the ship get home again? That's not clear.
- What's the deal with the dust devilly thing? It showed the hot soldier dude (no, I don't know anyone's name yet) where the lime was ... I guess) but then just disappeared? And we know absolutely nothing else about it. Huh?
- What's the deal with that little ship taking off of the big ship at the end, there? Does that mean there's a spy looking in the portholes at everyone? Double huh?
- Everyone is really mean and mostly uncooperative with each other for no reason other than that the writers have decided that they should be, apparently.
- Robert Carlyse reminds me of a meerkat.
- The soldier that kicked and hit Robert Carlyse would totally have been brought up on charges if he tried that crap for reals. (So says my ex-Marine hubby)
- Lou Diamond Phillips looks really old.

I watch Flash Forward, but I admit I don't watch it with my full attention because I am always too excited that Supernatural is on next. I suppose that is also proof that I haven't fallen in love with anyone from it yet, either. Probably because all the characters obviously have faults, possibly bringing about their own downfalls, they know they will encounter by the time their "visions" come to pass.
I realize I may be a bit biased that after watching other TV shows in which outcomes teach us that the future can't be altered, I base my own assumptions that no matter how hard the characters in Flash Forward try, they also will not be able to stray from their visions. It, therefore, gives me a "Why should I care about them" attitude.

LOL about Flash Forward. I totally know what you mean. It's a better timekiller than Smallville used to be, at least. Although I couldn't ever bring myself to watch more than 5 minutes of Smallville ... 5 minutes which inevitably included Lana Lang looking concerned.
Interesting thoughts about the future not being changeable. I hadn't thought about that but you're totally right.

Well, the long-sleeves can be explained away by them wanting to protect their skin from sun damage.
Why can't the ship get home again? That's not clear.
It would take them billions of light years to do so, apparently. IDK, I'm still working on that.
What's the deal with that little ship taking off of the big ship at the end, there? Does that mean there's a spy looking in the portholes at everyone? Double huh?
I'm with you on that one. I just sat there and blinked when that happened.

Well, they've got a right to be angry. They were just on a routine trip to the Icarus Base when all of a sudden they're stranded on this dilapidated ship with no hope of getting home. I'd be pissed and uncooperative too. The real question is why was the base attacked in the first place?
The soldier that kicked and hit Robert Carlyse would totally have been brought up on charges if he tried that crap for reals.
Word. Still, Dr. Rush was out of line with his racial comment. I'll admit, that pissed me the fuck off. Another thing that squicks me is this whole body-swapping thing. UM. WHUT.
Lou Diamond Phillips looks really old.
Quiet, you. He looks great. ;P

Yeah, I can see that initially, but it's pretty obvious that they need to cooperate to get anything done and it just seems dumb to be so mean to one another. Especially to Carlyse, who I admit is a bit of a dick but his dickishness doesn't seem to warrant the level of animosity I've seen. Or maybe I'm just super sensitive. :-)
Dr. Rush was out of line with his racial comment.
I seem to have missed that. Okay, it makes a little more sense now.
Yeah, the body-swapping thing is sorta confusing, too. It would have helped if they'd showed who was really there and then the consciousness, like by flipping back and forth between the actors or something.
LOL about Lou - you're a bit of a fan, eh?

... also, because I was addicted to SG-1 in it's heyday and am LOYAL, DAMMIT and refuse to watch a teenybopper knockoff. *mutters darkly*

the biggest part for me is that the characters
are just not likable at all
and the writers that are writing sgu are quit famous for writing plots with holes so big you could drive a truck through them
some interesting articles

It all makes for an intriguing setup that doesn't quite gel, even by the end of the third episode. Sure, "SGU" is grittier, darker and psychologically deeper than previous versions. But so far, it's also a lot less fun.

Two things strike me, beyond "Stargate Universe's" stiffened pace: the predictability of the action and the characters, and the apparent tolerance for borrowing that the sci-fi genre treats as a matter of course. Plagiarism is the notable rhetoric, down to how things look in space and what people out there ever say to one another. What, exactly, gives "Stargate Universe" the right to beam its heroes from ship to surface the way "Star Trek" does? Why, except for budget and/or lack of imagination, do the interiors of the enormous starcruiser here bring to mind the dank hallways of "Alien" and the neo-brutalism of George Lucas's "Star Wars," with LED-bulb gizmo decor from "Star Trek" and "Battlestar Galactica"?

"There is nothing new under the sun, sayeth the Preacher." Sci-fi is a genre littered with tropes; you can't turn around without stumbling over one. Calling the show bad because it relies on those tropes is unfair.

The ship is GALAXIES away. There was a graphic of the path of the ship showing a dozen or so way-stops; Dr Rush commented that each stop was a new galaxy. They're BILLIONS of lightyears from home, and there isn't enough power to dial Earth from that gate.
Yes, the implication is that there's a bad guy spying on them.
Everyone's pissed because they see Rush as having gotten them there by deception and arrogance (not without reason), and they are rapidly splitting into two camps: those who hate Rush, and those who see him as the only solution.
The soldier who assaulted Rush (Carlysle) was ALREADY in the brig, apparently for an assault. When the attack began, the Colonel let him out with the comment, "The charges are dropped. Let's go."
LDP has been aging, and not all that well. He looked awful in The King and I on Broadway, and that was almost a decade ago already.

FOR SURE. I lived in Phoenix for many years and that shit is just SUICIDE.
Okay, that makes sense about the ship being galaxies away, and about the guy who was already in the brig. Interesting comment about the people splitting into two groups - that could lead to some good drama in the future. I'm definitely going to stick it out for afew more epis because I am liking the lead hottie, even if he doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor. (The hotness makes up for that)
LOL
