Stick with Life on Mars. It's one of the best shows that we Brits had made in years. I find the accents weird sometimes too and I am a Brit, but I'm from the south whereas Gene and Sam are northerners!

Once you seen both series of LOM, you need to catch Ashes to Ashes which is the spin off series set in 1981. It's also fabulous.
